18th Century Whimsy

Whimsical set of engraving of various occupations by Martin Engelbrecht.

Martin Englebrecht, Engraver

This is a short post today, but I wanted to share some of the most whimsical and charming engravings from the 18th century artist, Martin Engelbrecht.

Engelbrecht was a German gent (1684-1756) who specialized in the engravings, printing and publishing of various themes. But my favorite series is the ‘occupations’ collection.

There are LOTS of these.
And they represent everything from Un Epicier (grocer) to Une Cuisiniere (cook) to Jardinier de parterre (flowerbed gardener) to a potter, clockmaker, wallpaper merchant and more.

Just Delightful!

They certainly are…each item held or on the person, is numbered and then referenced below.
They look like they could be intricate theatrical costume, don’t they?
